Obtaining a Nursing License by Examination in North Dakota

Step 1: Educational Requirements

Begin by completing an accredited nursing program, whether in North Dakota or another state. This could be an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Accelerated BSN programs are also available for those with prior degrees.

Step 2: Application Process

Applicants with a U.S. Social Security number and a completed nursing program can apply for licensure by examination. The process includes:

  1. Submitting an official transcript to the North Dakota Board of Nursing.
  2. Registering for the NCLEX through Pearson VUE and paying the associated fee.
  3. Completing the online Initial RN/LPN Exam Application on the North Dakota Board of Nursing website and paying the application fee.
  4. Undergoing a criminal background check.

After meeting these requirements, check the North Dakota Board of Nursing website to see if a Work Authorization has been issued. This authorization is valid for 90 days or until NCLEX results are received, allowing practice as a graduate nurse.

Step 3: Submit Transcripts

Request your nursing school to send an official transcript to the Board of Nursing. Electronic submissions are preferred, but a paper form is available if necessary.

Step 4: Background Check

Schedule fingerprinting with local law enforcement or a private service using the FBI Applicant card. Submit your fingerprints, payment, and the Criminal History Record Check form to the Board.

Step 5: NCLEX Examination

The NCLEX assesses your readiness to practice nursing safely. It covers areas such as Safe and Effective Care Environment, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, and Physiological Integrity. Once your application is complete, the Board will notify Pearson VUE of your eligibility, and you'll receive an Authorization to Test.

Upon passing the NCLEX, your license will be issued within three days. If unsuccessful, you'll receive a diagnostic report to guide further study, and you can retake the exam after 45 days, up to eight times annually, with applicable fees.

Licensing by Endorsement for Already Licensed Nurses

Nurses licensed in other states can apply for a North Dakota license by endorsement. Requirements include a U.S. Social Security number, completion of a nursing program, and 400 hours of practice in the last four years. Proof of original licensure by examination is necessary.

Steps include:

  1. Sending a transcript from your nursing program to the Board.
  2. Verifying licensure from your original and any active states.
  3. Completing the online RN Endorsement application on the North Dakota Board of Nursing website and paying the application fee.
  4. Conducting a Criminal History Record Check.

Check the Board’s website for a Temporary Permit, valid for 90 days.
