Obtaining Your Missouri Nursing License by Examination
- Educational Requirements
To be eligible for licensure by examination in Missouri, you must graduate from an accredited nursing program. Acceptable programs include:- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Accelerated BSN programs for individuals holding a non-nursing bachelor's degree
- Application Process
Complete the paper application for licensure, have it notarized, and mail it along with the required documents to the Missouri State Board of Nursing. Electronic applications are not accepted. First-time applicants are not required to pay an application fee. Include proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, such as a birth certificate or passport. - NCLEX Registration
Register for the NCLEX-RN exam through Pearson VUE and pay the $200 registration fee. It's recommended to register 3-4 weeks before your graduation date. - Transcripts Submission
Request your nursing program to send an official transcript directly to the Missouri Board of Nursing, indicating the degree awarded and graduation date. - Criminal Background Check
All applicants must undergo a criminal background check. In-state applicants should register through the Missouri Automated Criminal History System (MACHS) using the appropriate registration number. Out-of-state applicants can use the IdentoGO Cardscan process for fingerprinting. - Taking the NCLEX Exam
After your application is processed, you'll receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) via email. Upon passing the NCLEX-RN, the Missouri Board of Nursing will issue your RN license.
Licensure by Endorsement (For Nurses Licensed in Other States)
If you're a licensed nurse in another state and wish to practice in Missouri, you can apply for licensure by endorsement.Missouri is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), allowing nurses from other compact states to practice without obtaining additional licenses.

- Providing verification of your current RN license through Nursys.
- Submitting fingerprints for a background check via MACHS.
