A Guide to Nursing Licenses and Renewals in Arizona
Obtaining Your Arizona Nursing License
1. Educational Requirements
To apply for licensure, you must complete an accredited nursing program:
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Accelerated BSN programs for individuals holding a non-nursing degree
Graduates from out-of-state programs should ensure their transcripts, including graduation date and degree type, are sent to the AZBN.
2. Application Process
Initiate your application through the Arizona Nurse Portal. This platform will guide you through submitting personal details, verifying your legal status, and confirming your educational background.
3. Fingerprinting and Background Check
All applicants must undergo a criminal background check by submitting fingerprints. Local facilities offer fingerprinting services; the AZBN does not provide fingerprint cards.
4. NCLEX Examination
Register for the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN exam via Pearson VUE. It's advisable to apply approximately one month before graduation. Arizona permits unlimited attempts to pass the exam.
Renewing Your Arizona Nursing License
Renewal Timeline
RNs and LPNs must renew their licenses every four years by April 1. Renewals can be submitted up to six months before the due date and within 30 days afterward. If you continue to work on an expired license after May 1, late fees apply.

Note: Arizona does not require continuing education units (CEUs) for RN or LPN license renewal.
